Indian Springs Camp hosts our Annual Big Thicket Hogs & Strings BBQ Cookoff and Music Festival every year on the 3rd Saturday of October. This event focuses on a BBQ competition featuring pork dishes, rather than motorcycles, and includes a music festival. It is designed to be family-oriented and has been growing in popularity since its inception in 2017. Many attendees look forward to returning each year, with some having participated since the very first festival.
the music
Our musical acts feature performances by some of the most renowned artists in the music industry. Musicians such as Uncle Lucius, Shiny Ribs, Hayes Carl, and The Band of Heathens have performed at this event. The festival offers an intimate concert experience with a modest stage set amidst the natural beauty of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Attendees enjoy the performances from lawn chairs, creating a unique and memorable atmosphere that enhances the overall experience.
the food
The BBQ competition attracts some of the top Pit Bosses from Southeast Texas, all eager to compete for the prestigious “People’s Choice Award.” This award is determined by the festival attendees who vote for their favorite BBQ team. Competitors arrive the night before to prepare their dishes, which are then sold, sampled, and judged by both the audience and a panel of veterans. For those who prefer other flavors, the festival also features a variety of food vendors offering diverse tastes from Southeast Texas. Additionally, many Pit Bosses and vendors provide sweet treats to satisfy dessert cravings after enjoying the savory BBQ offerings.
the vendors
Attendees can explore a variety of local vendor booths offering homemade knives, jewelry, arts, and crafts. In addition to enjoying music and food, visitors have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction featuring items such as donated guns, BBQ smokers and grills, art, tools, and band-autographed merchandise and much more! The festival also hosts multiple firearm raffles throughout the day, providing additional excitement and opportunities for attendees to win unique prizes.
the purpose
Our festival serves to introduce Southeast Texas to Indian Springs Camp and its mission, which focuses on supporting “Adaptive Warriors.” These include veterans, first responders, and children with disabilities. The festival aims to raise funds for the camp, with 100% of the proceeds going to Indian Springs Camp, a registered 501 (c) (3) organization. The camp provides a space for these individuals to gather, heal, and grow through fellowship.
